What Is Baptism?

Baptism is a public declaration that you have trusted Jesus Christ as your Savior and have chosen to follow Him.

When you are baptized, you are identifying with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. Going beneath the water represents leaving your old life behind, and rising from the water represents the new life you have received through Christ.

“Therefore we were buried with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in newness of life.” — Romans 6:4 CSB

Baptism does not earn salvation. We are saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Baptism is an act of obedience that follows salvation and allows us to publicly celebrate what Jesus has done in our lives.

 

  • Jesus Was Baptized

    Jesus Himself was baptized, giving us an example to follow.

    “When Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water.”
    — Matthew 3:16

    Jesus Commanded His Followers to Be Baptized

    Before returning to heaven, Jesus instructed His followers to make disciples and baptize them.

    “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
    — Matthew 28:19

    Baptism Publicly Declares Your Faith

    Baptism is your opportunity to say before your family, church, and community:

    “I have decided to follow Jesus. My old life is gone, and I belong to Him.”

  • Our team will help you through every part of the baptism process. Before your baptism, we will contact you with instructions and answer any questions you may have.

    Please bring:

    • A dark-colored shirt and shorts or pants to wear during baptism

    • A towel

    • A complete change of clothes

    • A bag for your wet clothing

    Changing areas will be available. We also encourage you to invite your family and friends so they can celebrate this special moment with you.

  • We believe baptism should follow a personal decision to receive Jesus and follow Him. Children who clearly understand salvation and can personally express their faith may be baptized with the involvement and permission of a parent or guardian.

    A member of our ministry team will speak with the child and parent before baptism to make sure the child understands the meaning of this important decision.

  • You do not need to be baptized every time you recommit your life to God.

    However, you may consider baptism if you were baptized before personally choosing to follow Jesus, if you did not understand the meaning of baptism at the time, or if your previous baptism was not connected to your own profession of faith.
